An interesting note was discovered among the combat diaries of the 89th Tank Brigade. Fighting the German 58th Infantry Division in Lithuania on July 20th, 1944, they captured some pretty interesting things.
"Captured:
"Captured:
- Prisoners: 4
- Radio: 1
- APC: 1
- Carriers with ammunition: 2
- AT guns: 1
- Light tanks: 2 (BT)
- StuG SPG: 2"
It's unlikely that these tanks were acquired in the middle of nowhere in Lithuania. Most likely, these tanks belonged to Estonian police and were brought along for the ride, since an old tank is better than no tank. Unfortunately, the two battalions that performed this capture were surrounded the next day and had to fight their way back. The BT tanks were either abandoned or destroyed.
